WINDSOR CASTLE – DOWNTON ABBEY – STONEHENGE

Windsor Castle is a royal residence located in Windsor, in the English county of Berkshire, about 25 miles (40 km) west of central London. It has a strong association with the British royal family and encompasses nearly a thousand years of architectural history.

The original castle was constructed in the 11th century following the Norman invasion of England by William the Conqueror. It has been occupied by the reigning monarch since the reign of Henry I (1100–1135), making it the longest-occupied palace in Europe. The castle features opulent early 19th-century state apartments, described by art historian Hugh Roberts as “a superb and unrivalled sequence of rooms widely regarded as the finest and most complete expression of later Georgian taste.”

Within the castle walls lies St George’s Chapel, built in the 15th century, which is considered by historian John Martin Robinson to be “one of the supreme achievements of English Perpendicular Gothic” design.
